There was another guest at the hostel last night, Craig from Australia who is cycling eastwards. Pat kindly took us both on a trip to the nearby Painted Hills as the sun was setting.
The different colours are a result of volcanic ash that fused with different types of forest trees, the first layer from 35million years ago. Darker colours are tropical rainforest and lighter colours oak/elm forests. It was very peaceful and beautiful out on the hills.
